All Dayton Metro Libraries will be closed on Friday, July 4th in observance of Independence Day. The libraries will re-open on Saturday, July 5th.

Brothers in Battle, Best of Friends

The story of two inseparable friends and soldiers portrayed in the HBO miniseries Band of Brothers. William "Wild Bill" Guarnere and Edward "Babe" Heffron were among the first paratroopers of the U.S. Army--members of an elite unit of the 101st Airborne Division called Easy Company. Arguably the bravest, most efficient, physically fit, and tight-knit group of soldiers the Army has ever produced, the unit was called upon for every high-risk operation of the war, including D-Day, Operation Market Garden inHolland, the Battle of the Bulge, and the capture of Hitler's Eagle's Nest in Berchtesgaden. They fought side by side, until Guarnere lost his leg in the Battle of the Bulge. The two reconnected at the war's end and have been the best of friends ever since. In 2006, there were more than 4.7 million visits to the public libraries in Montgomery County. That is more than attendance at Kings Island, the Dayton Dragons and the Cincinnati Bengals combined (and we don’t even play on ESPN!). A recent study that looked at local library numbers also showed that we provide $3.69 in value for every tax dollar spent. Judging by all those visits, it looks like lots of people already knew that the library is the best deal in town. Read the entire study here.

And don't forget to sign up for the Summer Reading Clubs. This summer we have three great clubs: the children's summer reading club theme is Catch the Reading Bug featuring all our insect friends; the teen club will focus on the sounds of summer with the Tune In @ Your Library club; and adults are invited to join the fun with the It's A Mystery club. All the clubs run from June 2 to August 2 and are supported by the Friends of the Library.
